Nie tylko dinozaury - obca książka popularnonaukowa dla dzieci i młodzieży w polskim repertuarze wydawniczym

Abstract
The aim of this article is to analyse both the number and content of non-fi ction books for children and young adults published by the largest Polish publishing houses after 1945, to list translations of such books from other languages and to examine changes that have evolved in the editing of these translated books. To achieve these goals a relational database of non-fi ction books published from 1945 to September 2014 by two selected publishers was created. The main source of records was the catalogue of the Polish National Library. The analysis shows that the number of translations, the languages from which non-fi ction books for children and young adults were translated and the countries in which their original versions appeared were quite different in the 1945-1989 period and in the period from 1989 to the present. Translated books represented only a small fraction of all of such books published before 1989 while after 1989 there has been an infl ux of foreign books. The most important changes associated with this phenomenon and presented in this paper are: the emergence or decline of certain forms or types of publications as well as books on particular subjects; the diminishing in the diversity of topics in certain areas; the differences in objectives of practical guidebooks and publications with puzzles and the changes in the structure of the books’ titles and in the books’ series titles.
