Abstract

The following article focuses on Col. Józef Zaliwski’s (Joachim Lelewel’s emissary) unsuccessful attempt to spark off an armed uprising against Russia in 1833, after the November Uprising had been suppressed. This action was dubbed the ‘Galician action’ as the territory of the Galicia bordering the Kingdom of Poland (in the bifurcation of the Vistula and San Rivers) was planned to be the main base of the insurgents. And thus Kolbuszowa, situated in Galicia under Austrian rule, became the centre of the insurgent preparations. It is undeniable that Count Wincenty Tyszkiewicz, a co-owner of Kolbuszowa, actively participated in organizing the “Galician action’ through completing assignments given to him by Joachim Lelewel. Count Tyszkiewicz came down in the history of the Polish struggle for independence as an indefatigable political activist and a great patriot. His actions constitute proof of the fact that the paths to independence also led through Kolbuszowa. The court of the Counts of Tyszkiewicz in Kolbuszowa was an important coordinating centre for insurgents and the Paris emissaries.
