Role Of Anterior And Antero-Lateral Decompression In Pott’s Spine / Pott’s Paraplegia
Journal Title: International Journal of Orthopaedics Traumatology & Surgical Sciences - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 1
Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) of the spine (Pott’s disease) is the commonest and most dangerous form of skeletal TB. Early diagnosis and early judicious management is the key for treatment. This was a retrospective & prospective study during the period from Jun 2010 to July 2014. Total 30 surgically treated patients, out of which 17 were females and 13 were males. The mean age of our patients was 29. The course of the disease was progressive and of gradual onset in the majority of the cases. Spinal tuberculosis affects the body of vertebrae in 98% of the cases; hence surgical decompression should be anterior or antero-lateral. The improved drug penetration was achieved since surgical decompression removes fibrous barrier to drugs and the diagnosis is established beyond doubt. Laminectomy is advocated with the posterior complex disease and interspinous tubercular granuloma presenting as Spinal Tumor Syndrome.
