Role of non-collagenous proteins for dentine formation and mineralization. Vol. III. The SIBLING family proteins in dentinogenesis

Abstract
The third part in the series of three publications describing the role of the SIBLING family proteins in dentinogenesis concerns MEPE (matrix extracellular phosphoglycoprotein), ENAM (enamelin), OPN (osteopontin) and BSP (bone sialoprotein). MEPE, unlike the rest of the SIBLING family members, is strongly basic and is, therefore, much less able to bind calcium ions.66 Studies confirm that MEPE is secreted by odontoblasts to dentine matrix during dentinogenesis.67 Other proteins have been examined mainly in the context of their role in the osteogenesis and amelogenesis and, to a certain degree, in the context of dentine. Since it is believed that mineralization of bone and dentine is similar, the most significant reports concerning OPN and BSP have been analysed for the purpose of this study. In turn, direct presence of enamel and dentine tissues – the enamel-dentine junction – with active participation of enamelin, is the basis for assumption that this protein may also influence the dentine mineralization process.
