Role of some medicinal plants in management of chronic bronchial asthma

Abstract

Background: Bronchial asthma is a clinical syndrome with possible correlation to medicinal plants in relieving the asthmatic symptoms. Methods: This study was performed in the Al- Kadhimiya teaching hospital from September 2008 to may 2009 on 62 patients of both sexes who were allocated to six groups plus 15 healthy adults as control. Each group was given one of the following agents: Prednisolone, Fennel, Thyme and combinations of Prednisolone with Fennel or Thyme or Anisum and their pulmonary function tests were conducted as well as measuring the levels of serum electrolytes: Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), Potassium (K) and Selenium (Se) before and after the treatment. Results: Most of the tested plants have positive effects on pulmonary function tests with significant increase in values of forced expiratory volume in first second (FEV1%) and forced volume capacity (FVC) and clinical improvement of patients condition and marked decrease in asthmatic attacks. Conclusion: Medicinal plants can reduce the symptoms of bronchial asthma and improve pulmonary functions. They are safe, less hazardous and cheap, but may take long time.
