Journal Title: Revista Romana de Studii Eurasiatice - Year 2005, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

The beginning of diplomatic relationship between China and Romania started in 1880-1881. At that time, Prince Carol notified Romania independence by letters sent to various countries, included China. There are some references about romanians living in China (Shanghai) at the beginning of the twentieth century. Romania tried to set up economical relations with China and Japan. To this respect, it was required the establishment of a Romanian Consulate in Shanghai. Unfortunately, romanian authorities didn’t succeed in bringing this plan to an end. However, the romanians living in Shanghai took the initiatives to organize a Romanian Cultural Circle. The circle was set up in november 1930. The Romanian comunity formed this project to gather up occasionally and read Romanian books and newapapers, so that they may not forget their mother language. Finally, on 27 Aprilie 1941, the Romanian Chamber of Commerce in the Far East was set up. Its major goal was to develop commercial relations between Romania and the Far East. On 8 october 1941, an honorific consulate of Romania was set up in Shanghai.
