Rootless peoples’ quest for existence: In the context of Prafulla Roy’s novel

Abstract

The partition of India divided the Bengalee race into two groups named Hindu and Muslims. The ‘Two-Nation- Theory’ gave birth of two countries India and Pakistan. In that scenario the Muslims of Kolkata went to East Pakistan and from there the Hindus also came to West Bengal and Tripura. Those destitute and home-less people took shelter in the station platform and in refugee camps. Through much negligence and dishonor they get the new identity named ‘Refugee’. Thus their struggle for existence began.Contextually worth-mentioning that many of the litterateur of Bengal in the 5th Decade was the victim of partition and Prafulla Roy also belongs to that group. This mentality of a refugee inspires Prafulla Roy to create some of his novels like—‘keya Patar Nauka’(1969), ‘Shatadharay Baye Jay’(2008), ‘Uttal Samayer Itikatha’(2014), ‘Nona Jal Mithe Mati’, ‘Bhagabhagi’(2001), ‘Shindhuparer Pakhi’(1958) and many others. In my final paper it will be discussed elaborately how Prafulla Roy has depicted in reality the crisis, struggle, pain and disaster of the rootless people of that period.
