Abstract
Preterm birth is one of a major medical, psychological and socio-economic problem worldwide. Children preterm born are at risk of mortality, morbidity and lifespan sequelae. The aim of the research was to assess psychomotor development of preterm babies in the early childhood. The study included 49 preterm infants, 21 single babies and 28 twins. The psychomotor development was assessed by using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition (BSID-III) at a mean, non-corrected age of 33.80 months (SD = 5.16). The results indicated that there are no statistical differences in a cognitive, language and motor domain between single infants and twins. The single infants and twins differ significantly in a gross motor domain, while preterm infants from single pregnancies receive lower outcomes compared to preterm infants from multiple pregnancies. This article presents analyses and discussion of results.
