SACRED SPACE OF CITY: ADAPTATION TO THE CITY’S CULTURAL CONTEXT
Journal Title: Δόξα / Докса. Збірник наукових праць з філософії та філології - Year 2018, Vol 2, Issue
Abstract
The article is devoted to the productivity of an interdisciplinary approach to the study of sacred places in the urban cultural space: a visual-spatial study, cultural-anthropological, semiotic analysis, Urban Study, etc. The purpose of the analysis is to identify the everyday and symbolic contexts of religious objects that contribute to their adaptation in the modern city. In modern Odessa, as in other European cities, sacred places undergo a conversion process. They serve the processes of territorialization and heritagization of urban communities. In the religious space local identity is being formed. These places themselves are built on the basis of micronarratives, which allow them to adapt the urban cultural context. The spatial structures of Odessa present it as a secular city. However, many sacred places, some of which are multilayered historical and cultural texts (hyperpalimpest), demonstrate relevance for urban communities of religious practices.
