SAFETY AND ERROR EVALUATION IN CHEMOTHERAPY DRUG PREPARATION WITH AUTOMATED SYSTEM

Journal Title: WORLD JOURNAL PHARMACY AND PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCE - Year 2019, Vol 8, Issue 5

Abstract

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the world. 1 in 6 people yearly dies from cancer disease. Together with radiotherapy and surgery, chemotherapy is one of the main cancer treatment approaches. By using therapeutic agents that kill rapidly dividing cells, many of the chemotherapy drugs have cytotoxic affect even in the healthy individuals. Almost all of the chemotherapy drugs are administered as IV and have to be prepared daily due to their stability in the solutions. Cytotoxicity of the drugs creates safety and accuracy concerns for the technicians and other personnel involved in drug preparation. In this case study, an automated drug preparation device is evaluated for dose accuracy. The error is calculated as the standard deviation from the prescribed dose. The results show a deviation less than %3 which is within %5 limit of ISO international limit and %10 limit of determined in USP 797 monograph.
