Abstract

Salah ad-Din al-Ayyubi, known in the West as “Saladin”, is the most famous figure of the history of the Crusades with his military successes and the personality he possesses. He stopped the advance of the Crusades with his military achievements and he built a strong state by gathering scattered Muslims under a single roof. With his extraordinary personality, Saladin has become a respected figure in admiration of his age both by the Islamic World and by the Christian World. Although Saladin has been forgotten in the Islamic World short after his death, his fame continued to live in the Christian West. Saladin's perception in the West had gradually broken away from historical facts and gave place to a strong legendary powerful character. In this study, the image of Saladin in Western sources of his age and the transformation of this image are examined.
