Saving the «spirit of the place» at the revalorization of the historic small town

Abstract
This article proposes a solution of the problem of increasing the value of the existing historic environment of a small town by restoring the architectural and artistic significance of its architectural and urban monuments; by renovation of the low-value background buildings, following the principle of continuity based on the compositional, planning, spatial, architectural and mental features that developed during the entire period of the town's existence; by creation the multi-comfortable urban environment in the first place for the residents of this town, taking into account their needs, wants, perceptions, emotions, memory and local traditions. Revalorization is considered as the initial and main component of the process of restoration, renewal and sustainable development of the historic small town. It is necessary to restore the existing monuments of architectural and urban heritage; correctly adapt them for active modern use; to fill the historic urban environment with various functions; to equip it for long and safe stay; and the most important thing is to save the “spirit of the place” and its atmosphere. As an example, the historic small town of Bar in Vinnytsia region is considered. Its modern direction of development as a cultural, tourist and recreational center is defined. Recommendations on the creation of an attractive urban environment are given and they are considered on the example of the revalorization project of the town historic center.
