SCAPE GOAT – EMISSARY GOAT

Abstract
The modern cultural code features the concept of a Scapegoat. It is definitely abused. According to the author, it departs from the account of the ancient ritual of purification described in the Book of Leviticus 16: 7-27. The article adduces the position about this ritual based on Jewish teaching referring to the medieval Jewish thinker, Maimonides. Nowadays, the term “scapegoat” may be used not only in reference to the innocent victims of persecution but also to people who are doubtlessly guilty of the acts of which they are accused. According to the author of the article, the anthropological mythologisation of violence which was elaborated by the French thinker, René Girard, is a most dangerous thing. A consistent adoption of the way of thinking presented in this concept may lead to the diminishing of the responsibility of persecutors and murderers.<br/><br/>
