Scar cosmesis after skin closure of inguinal hernia with stainless steel staples compared to conventional sutures

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Surgery - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 2

Abstract

Background: Lichtenstein meshplasty is one of the most common surgical procedure performed by surgeons these days. In this study we compare staples and sutures in skin closure of inguinal hernia surgery to find out the better scar. Materials and Method: In this prospective study, a total of 100 patients were divided into two groups, according to type of closure. Ethilon 2-0(Ethicon) was used for closure in the suture group Autosure ROYALTM stapler was used in the staples group. Scar cosmesis was measured using Vancouver scar scale after 1 month and 6 months. The results were analysed using Pearson’s Chi-square test, Mann Whitney test, Z test. Results: Staples produced better scars than sutures. Mean score of scar cosmesis after one month in suture group was 4.68 (S.D. 3.49) and 2.60 (S.D. 2.76) in staples. Mean score of scar cosmesis after six months in suture group was 1.26 (S.D. 1.84) and 0.33 (S.D. 0.82) in staples groups. Conclusion: Stainless steel stapler is a better method of closure than conventional sutures, as it produces a much better scar.
