Screening for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus by Determination of Glycated Hаemoglobin

Abstract

Objective — to identify the prevalence of disorders of carbohydrate metabolism according to the results of for glycated hemoglobin screening. Materials and Methods. The determination of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in 1564 people aged 18 to 90 years has been carried out. The age structure of the surveyed was as follows: up to 45 years — 20 % of the total number surveyed; 46–59 years — 38 %; 60–74 — 30 %; 75 years and over — 12 %. Laboratory studies were performed in the laboratory centers Synevo. Evaluation of the findings was carried out by the level of HbA1c in venous blood: up to 6 % — disorders of carbohydrate metabolism does not exist; 6.1–6.4 % — prediabetes; more than 6.5 % — diabetes mellitus. Results. In 62 % of the total number of surveyed, HbA1c levels did not exceed 6 %. In 12 % HbA1c level was within 6.1–6.4 %. In 16 % of patients revealed HbA1c level was 6.5 % or more. These individuals may be patients with diabetes mellitus type 2. They require further detailed examination and therapy in accordance with the current protocol in Ukraine regarding treatment of patients with diabetes mellitus type 2. Conclusions. Screening for content of glycated hemoglobin revealed violations of carbohydrate metabolism, which in 12 % of the total surveyed can be regarded as a state of prediabetes, in 16 % — as type 2 diabetes mellitus. The number of patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus is increasing after the age of 46 years, reaching a maximum in men of age group 60–74 years, in women — after 75 years. The low interest of the population in screening for the state of carbohydrate metabolism draws attention. Only 25 % of invited subjects have carried out a survey.
