Screening methods for dredged material contamination assessment

Journal Title: Biuletyn Instytutu Morskiego - Year 2016, Vol 31, Issue 1

Abstract

In the following work, you will find proposed screening methods, which could provide information on potential contamination of sediment excavated in the course of dredging activities. Should “contamination” be observed, the sediment would be subjected to further, more detailed, and expensive chemical testing. The work constitutes a review of scientific literature on the subject of the priority substances that fall under European Community legislation and refers to research of the marine environment, and it describes the proposed new attitudes towards efficient and rapid assessment of to what degree dredged material is contaminated. The authors propose performing easy, cheap, and fast sediment screening tests, based on physical-chemical parameters of sediment, like forms of carbon (black carbon, organic carbon) and bioassays (especially with indicator organisms Vibrio fischeri; Heterocypris incongruens). Selection of priority substances to be subjected to further chemical research would be based on a thorough inventory and significance of the sources (both present and historical) or/and tendencies of the potential contaminants to cumulate in sediment in the region where dredging works are to be carried out.
