Second primary malignancies of the Head and Neck region: A case report

Journal Title: Polski Przegląd Otorynolaryngologiczny - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 3

Abstract

Billroth was the first who introduced the concept that a patient could develop cancer twice. The last two decades have seen a widespread increase of the problem of second primary tumors (SPT). This fact led us to concern about the effectiveness of the actual cancer treatment and of the further survival rates. The presence of the second primary tumors in the head and neck is highly common. There is general consensus among authors about the impact of cigarette smoking habits and alcohol abuse on higher risks of development of the SPT.Simultaneous multiple malignancies of the larynx are rarely reported. This paper describes a case of simultaneous multiple primary squamous cell carcinoma in the larynx and hypopharynx.
