Seed Germination and Seedling Growth Bioassay for Evaluation of Allelopathic Potential of Petiveria alliacea against Four Selected Seeds

Journal Title: Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences - Year 2017, Vol 7, Issue 11

Abstract

The allelopathic potential of Petiferia alliacea was evaluated using seed germination and seedling growth bioassay. Seeds of Amaranthus,Tomato, Cowpea and Maize were used as test seeds and the medium was Whatman No 1 filter paper placed in petri dish. Different concentrations of Petiferia alliacea extract in MeOH were prepared and used—1, 2.5 and 5% w/w. The extract inhibited the seed germination and growth of the Amaranthus and Tomato to a large extent, while seeds of cowpea and maize were inhibited to a reasonable extent. The result showed that Petiferia alliacea has the considerable allelopathic potential and can be further studied.
