SELF-CONCEPT AS AN IMPORTANT FACTOR OF SPORTS SUCCESS

Journal Title: Sport Mont - Year 2006, Vol 0, Issue 10

Abstract

Many psychophysical characteristics and abilities are important for sports success. One of the most impoertant psychic factors is self-confidence of a sportsman, i.e. trust in his own self and his abilities. The promenent component of self-confidence is a selfconcept i.e. self-awareness. It can be broken down to a self-image, (ego perception, ego ideal) and an image of one's own body. Every individual evaluates himeself based on what he would like to be, how the others see him, what he thinks the others see him, on the basis of his personality traits, habits, achieved success, manifest behaviour, thoughts, physical appearance, etc. The purpose of this research is to determine which of the above components are the most important for self-confidence of a sportsman and his success. We have put forward a hypothesis that the major role for the awareness of a sportsman is perception of his own body, hence that there is a difference in self-confidence according to the subjective and objective evaluation of the current level of training and the quality of body movements. We have also assumed that there are those with whom the difference in the self-confidence level can be made easily at the moment when they perform, i.e. when they play a match or have another form of performance as opposed to other situations in life.
