Self-healing potential of people experiencing alcohol-related problems. Literature review on self-change studies (1990–2004)

Journal Title: Alkoholizm i Narkomania - Year 2005, Vol 18, Issue 4

Abstract

Introduction. The objective of this article is to provide an overview of the results of studies on natural recovery from alcohol abuse/dependence. Methodology. The literature review presented here takes into consideration self-change studies which have been published between 1990 and 2004. More specifically, the Medline database was searched to identify studies covering an exploration of self-change phenomenon or an identification of factors triggering or maintaining the recovery process. Results. Taken together, the studies surveyed point out that self-change is a process shaped by personal values and individual beliefs, available resources, social response and a set of unpredictable, but ‘naturally’ occurring events. Negative consequences of drinking tend to trigger self-change, whereas positive life experiences prove to be supporting factors for the maintenance process of recovery.
