Abstract
The article is devoted to the study of semantics of emotional vocabulary in the modern German language of the second half of the twentieth century. The semantic filling of the linguistic units through the theory of differential emotions (С. E. Izard) which appear in G. Grass’s novel “Katz und Maus” (Cat and Mouse) as negative, positive and neutral is realized in the narrative of four grammatical branches: substantive, verb, adjective, adverbial which are characterized by two main tendencies: the tendency towards quantitative and qualitative asymmetry of significance and the tendency towards semantic-grammatical symmetry in the imaginary plane. In the quantitative asymmetric contrast the fact of the frequency of emotional use is decisive, with qualitative – its meaning and semantics, the symmetrical comparison is identical with grammatical function and with semantic position in the structure of the syntactic construction. A detailed study of the experimental card file concluded by the author by the method of continuous selection, made it possible to draw conclusions about the restriction of the use of emotional vocabulary, its variability: from noun (emotional state) to emotional assessment with the line “negative-positive”, expressiveness (facial expression, posture), structurality (shades of emotions), modality (negative emotional experiences), determination (stylistically marked semantics of a reduced style), intensity (brightness of expression of emotions), dynamics (change of emotional state), result (positive effects of the action), quality (characteristics, properties of objects as carriers of emotional state), situations (real and imaginary). The typicality of some emotions is revealed for example: joy, peace, surprise, fear, anger and not the typicality of others, namely: interest, shame, guilt, sorrow, disgust. It is proved that lexical means, phraseological units coincide with commonly used vocabulary values and extend their text value. The relative diversity of the semantics of the analyzed material determined by linguistic and extralinguistic factors is established. These findings confirm the well-known arguments of linguists regarding the vocabulary and text lexical meaning of the word, its semantic development under the influence of linguistic and extralanguage factors, as well as the manifestation of the semantic potential of the word in the communicative and pragmatic aspects.
