The concepts of TIME and SPACE in John Berger’s essay about the Fayum Portraits: a linguo-cognitive approach to the analysis of ekphrasis

Abstract

The article is grounded in the rich tradition of investigation of ekphrasis as a “verbal representation of the visual representation”. Following the idea of singling out the genre of novel-ekphrasis, it is suggested that the genre of essay-ekphrasis could be singled out as well. It is further argued that the methods of cognitive linguistics can be applied to the analysis of such ekphrastic essays. The essay-ekphrasis under the linguo-cognitive scrutiny in this study is the text “The Fayum Portrait Painters” by John Berger. The concepts TIME and SPACE are identified as the key conceptual constituents of the ekphrasis in the investigated essay. These concepts are represented in the essay through a number of lexical, grammatical and textual (precedent texts) means. The concept TIME is activated in the essay as a complex of knowledge about natural and social time while the concept SPACE is represented as a complex of knowledge about physical and psychological space. The dynamic interaction between the concepts of TIME and SPACE creates in the essay a number of conceptual oppositions and combinations that play the crucial role in developing the meaning of the essay. These conceptual oppositions and combinations are the following: TIME OF CREATION OF THE FAYUM PORTRAITS = LONG AGO :: TIME OF EXISTENCE OF THE FAYUM PORTRAITS = PRESENT; TIME OF EXISTENCE OF THE FAYUM PORTRAITS = TIME OF PERSEPTION OF THE FAYUM PORTRAITS = PRESENT; EXISTENCE OF FAYUM PORTRAITS + PERSEPTION OF FAYUM PORTRAITS = ONE AND THE SAME PSYCHOLOGICAL SPACE. The conceptual opposition TIME OF CREATION OF THE FAYUM PORTRAITS = LONG AGO :: TIME OF EXISTENCE OF THE FAYUM PORTRAITS = PRESENT is then overridden in the essay which results in the development of the new meaning LIFE IS A GIFT as an outcome of the operation of ekphrasis.
