Semantics of legal terms in translations of international European integration documentation
Journal Title: Scientific journal «International Journal of Philology» - Year 2014, Vol 1, Issue 206
Abstract
The article investigates the ways to render semantics of English terms in the translation of international legal instruments. The main objective of the paper is to track changes in the semantic content of lexical items, semantic reasons of semantic displacements towards desemantization/information compression and systematize the ways and means of translating legal terms and determine their structural and semantic features. Relevance of research is stipulated by increasing the research interest in studying vocabulary of the languages in terms of "discrepancy" in codification and activation of translation mechanisms for more accurate reproduction of linguistic units to avoid ambiguity or even manipulating contents. It is also associated with lack of complex analysis of techniques of legal translation from English to Ukrainian in domestic and foreign linguistics. Legal terminology abounds in predominantly complex terms and terms-phrases, their translation consisting of two procedures - the analytical and synthetic. Important role in the translation of phrases it played by analytical phase - the translation of its components. When translating legal terms such methods as general description of a concept, transcription, loan translation and translation by using prepositions, are used. The biggest problem emerging in translating legal terms is their ambiguity; therefore translation should be done through focusing on the context of both a phrase or sentence and a text as a whole.
