Sensory masking and its projection in language. Shades of forgotten meanings
Journal Title: Scientific journal «International Journal of Philology» - Year 2014, Vol 1, Issue 206
Abstract
It is affirmed that physiological phenomenon of sensory masking has its deep projection in logic and language and is reflected in the notion of ―sense shade‖. Four types of names ratio (after L. Euler) are given. It is emphasized that the second type of relation (intersection) is the most widespread in lexical system of language. Sensory masking is defined as non-distinguishing of two or more irritations directed on two neighbouring neurons, and non-distinguishing of interrupted in time two portions of irritation directed on one neuron. The folding of several quanta of space and time in one common reflection is idem of the second type of names ratio – intersection (after Euler), and idem of polysemy and synonymy in language. The intersection zone contains so called ―gene of changes‖. It is a sort of ―eruption zone‖ where new change is born. A sort of the following series of transmutation takes place here: А → аb → аB → Bа →B →Bc → bc → bC→ Cb → C etc. As analogy to sensory masking in physiology, zone of intersection in language may be characterized as ―shade of sense‖ where some quantitative metrics are not distinguished, where ―the new‖ and ―the old‖, ―yes‖ and ―no‖, ―plus‖ and ―minus‖ may take place. The genesis of Indo-European concept*ḡhaṷ is given as the example. It is demonstrated the evolution of this concept from the first Indo-European reflex ―to open the mouth‖ through ―to feed‖ till ―bring up‖ and ―to educate‖. The analogy to energy of electron and word’s semantic energy is drawn. The Bohr’s Postulates are extrapolated with language.
