Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 2

Abstract

Background: Blood transfusion is a life-saving therapeutic intervention and millions of lives are saved each year globally through this procedure. However, blood transfusions are associated with certain risks which can lead to adverse consequences, it carries the risk of the transmission of blood borne infectious agents. With every unit of blood transfused there is 1%chance of transfusion associated problems including transfusion transmitted infections. In India blood is screened for five diseases which could be transmitted through blood and produce serious illness- HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis, and Malaria. Aim: To study the sero prevalence of transfusion transmitted infections (TTIs) amongst voluntary as well as replacement blood donors. Material and Methods: This study was done in Government General Hospital, Blood bank, Mahabubnagar district, Telangana state, India. Study duration was five years, from July 2013 to June 2018. Data were collected from the records of blood bank which also included data of blood donation camps. Data regarding sex, screening test results and type of donors were collected from the records. Results: Out of 9432 donors in the study period of five years, from June 2013 to May 2018. Most of the donors in this study are voluntary donors constituting around 92.8 % of the total donors. Total screening positives were 254 out of the total 9432 units accounting to 2.69%. Out of all TTIs, most of the positives belong to Hepatitis B virus, HBs Ag positives were 172 cases (1.82%), followed by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) of 68 cases (0.72%), then by Syphilis of 09 cases (0.09%) and Hepatitis C virus (HCV) by 04 cases (0.04%) and only one case(0.01%) was found positive for Malaria. 05 cases (0.05%) were found to be sero reactive for >2 infections [co infection] for both HIV and Hbs Ag.
