Service cock only indirectly affects hatchability in laying hens
Journal Title: Animal Science Papers and Reports - Year 2010, Vol 28, Issue 2
Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of service sire on fertilization rate and loses during hatching as a way of increasing the accuracy of breeding value estimation of layers for hatchability. Layers from five generations of two breeds – Rhode Island White and Rhode Island Red – were individually recorded for fertilization rate, percentage of chicks hatched from eggs laid, set, and fertilized. Two statistical models, both fitting random animal additive genetic and permanent environment effects along with fixed joint effect of hatch-year × hatch-number, differed with regard to presence or absence of random effect of service sire. Of the traits studied fertilization rate is least influenced by service sire which can be neglected when evaluating fertilization. Although service sire effect is small, both absolutely and relatively, failing to account for it in a model evaluating number of chicks hatched may result in substantial overestimation of heritability. Service sire effect accounted for in the model can also add to the accuracy of the hens’ proofs for hatchability. Correlation between direct additive and service sire effects may be dependent on the population it is estimated in.

Performance, blood profile, carcass and meat traits and tissue morphology in growing rabbits fed mannanoligosaccharides and zinc-bacitracin continuously or intermittently
The study aimed at evaluation the effect of mannanoligosaccharides (MOS) and zinc-bacitracin (ZnB) administered continuously (+) or intermittently (+/-) upon growing performance, carcass and meat traits, blood profile an...
The ability of zinc-binding proteins from boar seminal plasma to bind heparin and phosphorylcholine
Zinc-binding proteins (ZnBPs) isolated from boar seminal plasma exert multiple effects on boar spermatozoa. The aim of this study was to determine whether the isolated zinc-binding proteins were capable of binding additi...
Ecological, behavioural and economic effects of insects on grazing farm animals – a review
High populations of various insect species, especially common in the summer, may adversely affect farm animal health because of the transmission of contagious and parasitic diseases and the induction of insect allergies....
The effect of cystatin B gene (CSTB ) on productive traits in pigs
Cystatin B gene is a candidate gene for carcass and meat quality traits of pigs and belongs to the family 1 of cysteine proteinase inhibitors. The enzyme is a cathepsin inhibitor and the proteolytic cystatin/cathepsin sy...
Evaluation of expression of endothelin A receptor gene in the follicular granulosa cells of broiler hens as related to variation of plasma leptin
This study was designed to investigate levels of ETAR gene expression in the granulosa layer of broiler hens with different levels of plasma leptin and lipids (cholesterol and triacyglycerol). To induce different plasma...
