Severe Thrombocytopenia and Bleeding Secondary to Acute Viral Hepatitis E

Journal Title: Journal of Communicable Diseases - Year 2017, Vol 49, Issue 2

Abstract

We here report a rare pediatric case of a 12-year-old male, who presented with severe thrombocytopenia and bleeding, and was eventually diagnosed to be having acute hepatitis E. The thrombocytopenia resolved spontaneously along with improvement in hepatitis. Thrombocytopenia is known to be associated with many infectious diseases but secondary to acute Hepatitis E infection is very rarely reported. In fact, this is the second pediatric case of thrombocytopenia complicating the course of HEV infection in English literature and first case in which spontaneous recovery occurred without use of any immunomodulators.
