Share of by-products in the output of medium-size sawmills

Abstract

Share of by-products in the output of medium-size sawmills. Wood processing in sawmills involves segregation of by-products. The share of individual groups of these products and their form depend on the volume of production and applied technologies. The type of generated residues and the grade of their fragmentation is also determined by other factors, among them the species and size of converted raw material. These factors determine possibilities of rational utilization of wood by-products - wooden biomass which is of significant meaning for wood-based panels industry, pulp and paper industry and the producers of energy materials. Due to the domination of small and medium-size plants in mechanical wood conversion, the most important suppliers of wood by-products are medium-size enterprises. The article determines the share of various forms of wood by-products generated during the conversion of softwoods such as pine and spruce. The impact of volume of conversion and classification of produced materials on the type of generated postproduction by-products: bark, sawdust, chips and chunk wood, and afterwards the analysis of results describing the impact of generic, qualitative and dimensional variability. Verification of processes was carried out at medium-size sawmills. The study embraced the period between 2013 and 2017.
