SHIP PURCHASING FROM THE USA AND THE ACTIVITIES OF THE ZINCIRKIRAN COMMISSION AFTER WORLD WAR II

Abstract
During the Second World War, Turkey was deprived of strengthening its commercial shipping through purchasing ships abroad. However, after the war, it became possible to purchase ships from Europe and the USA. For this purpose, a commission including also authorities from State Maritime Administration (Devlet Denizyolları İdaresi) was sent abroad. Thanks to the activities of this commission, two cargo ships from Sweden, seventeen ships including two tankers, seven ships and eight cargo ships from the USA, hence, totally nineteen ships were bought. This article examines the criteria this commission used in the purchasing process; thus, the ship types Turkey needed then. It should also be noted that the activities of the commission mentioned have first been involved and studied in this article.
