Significance of angiogenesis in childhood neoplasms

Journal Title: Onkologia Polska - Year 2006, Vol 9, Issue 3

Abstract

The article remains a review concerning a significance of angiogenesis in childhood neoplasms. Angiogenesis means a formation of new blood vessels from already existing vasculature. This process is regulated by the endogenic modulators, from which the best known are: VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor), bFGF (basie fibroblast growth factor), G-CSF (colony stimulatig factor), TNFa (tumor necrosis factor) and interleukins like IL-2, IL-6, IL-8. Nu-merous studies in adults proved, that intensity of angiogenesis remains an unfavourable prognostic factor in many solid tumors and hematological malignancies. In children, howeverthere is only limited research experience regarding the role of angiogenesis in malignant disorders. Moreover, the results of pediatrie studies are controversial with regard to the clinical and pro-gnostic role of angiogenesis in this cohort of patients.
