Significance of Selected Somatic and Functional Parameters of Learning and Teaching of Swimming Skills to Girls on 10-year-old
Journal Title: Antropomotoryka. Journal of Kinesiology and Exercise Sciences - Year 2003, Vol 13, Issue 25
Abstract
The pace at which swimming is acquired is an issue that has been seldom undertaken by authors. In some well-known publications, their authors have been limiting their interest concerning the schooling of swimming skills to determine the level of this skill depending on the volume of the motor stimulus and the schooling method applied (Bartkowiak 1999). It is generally considered, as indicated by practice, that the children at the younger school age learn swimming the fastest, i.e. during the period of favourable biological changes and during a stable phase of development. This period is characterised by a general harmony in physical development and a specific perfection in movement (Wolański 1986, Szopa at all 1996). This, however, does not mean that all children at the younger school age acquire their swimming skills equally fast. Therefore, when undertaking this research, the authoress wished to try to determine the pace of the acquisition of swimming skills by 10-year-old girls with reference to the selected somatic and functional factors as well as co-ordination and physical fitness predispositions. This study is an attempt at answering the following research question: How did the level of the acquired swimming skills change in the case of the girls at the younger school age in comparison to the selected somatic and functional factors as well as co-ordination and physical fitness predispositions? It seems that on basis of the above analyses and observations concerning the progress in the mastering of swimming skills by 10-year-old girls in relation to the selected somatic and functional as well as co-ordination and physical fitness predispositions the following conclusions may be drawn: 1. After one year of schooling, only 15.5% of the girls mastered their swimming skills at the good level. The majority of them, 62.02%, learnt to swim at the intermediate level, whereas almost one fourth of the schoolgirls, 22.48%, swam poorly. 2. The 10-year-old girls with a higher level of physical development showed superiority in the pace at which they acquired their swimming skills in comparison to their contemporaries who evinced lower indices of somatic and functional parameters. 3. The level of co-ordination and physical fitness improvement may be important for swimming progress of children, especially at the younger school age. 4. The flexibility of the foot proved to be the most characteristic parameter that diversified the subjects. The schoolgirls who best learnt how to swim evinced a considerably higher
