Abstract
Aim of the study: To assess the incidence of dental caries in 12-year-old children living in Lower Silesia Region. Material and methods: For the study 201 children aged 12 years and living in urban (big and small towns) and rural areas were randomly selected. Dental status was assessed according to the WHO criteria by means of the following parameters: caries frequency, mean DMF/T values, and SiC index. Results: Overall frequency of caries amounted to 90% with mean values of DMF/T and SiC index 4.21 and 7.42, respectively. These values were much higher in rural areas than in children living in big towns or in small towns. In girls, indices were higher than in boys. Conlusions: The obtained data revealed high levels of caries and high value of SiC in one-third of 12-year-old children from Lower Silesia region. Girls manifested higher caries prevalence than boys, and the indices were higher in rural areas than in small and big towns. There is a need to implement targeted prophylactic strategies and oral health education and promotion programmes to decrease the incidence of caries.
