Abstract
G.S. Morozova. Rural areas: the scientific and theoretical foundations of the essence and the modern problems of their sustainable development. The relevance of the theoretical research of rural territories is substantiated, since the existing definition lacks functionality, that is, the possibility of using and adapting the concept of "rural territory" for the needs of not only different branches of the economy, but also social, institutional and environmental spheres. The article analyzes and generalises the main scientific and theoretical approaches and methods that underlie the definition of the essence and content of the concept of "rural territories". It has been established that rural territories should be characterized by economic efficiency, environmental safety and social justice, which in turn are the main vectors of the sustainable development model that Ukraine has chosen today. Based on the analysis of scientific approaches to the definition of rural territories, the definition of this category has been developed. The theoretical questions concerning the basic provisions of sustainable development of rural territories of Ukraine are considered. The modern problems of rural areas development are described and characterized. Key words: rural territories, sustainable development, village, earth, soil, problems of development.
