SIMULATORS OF FRAGMENTS

Abstract
Some fragment-simulating projectiles (FSP) also named as avatars are described in the paper. Following examples of real fragments are also presented: standard fragment with the weight of 1.1 g and fragments with greater weight (FSP fragments [1], substitute fragments, average-sized shrapnel, real simulating fragments) used for ballistic tests of e.g. bullet-proof jackets, helmets, ballistic screens, or for firing to combat vehicles and transporters. A detailed description of FSP substitute shrapnel created at the detonation of 155 mm high explosive shell is included with the classes of ballistic protections which are determined by using it. Moreover an insensitive shrapnel (shrapnel imitating the impact of a projectile on ammunition filled with explosive material) used for checking the susceptibility of ammunition against action of mechanical stimuli is presented. An opinion about the “IED shrapnel”, fragments from mine traps, “clouds of fragments” simulating the effect of an improvised explosive device (IED) [2] created at IED fragmentation explosion [1] is also expressed.<br/><br/>
