SKILL-DEPENDENT DIFFERENCES IN END-COMPETITION BLOOD ANABOLIC-CATABOLIC STATUS AND ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE IN ELITE FEMALE JUDOKAS
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2017, Vol 33, Issue 1
Abstract
Background. This study compared the competition scores and post-competition blood anabolic-catabolic hormone status in elite Polish female judo contestants of higher and lower skill levels.Material and methods. This research comprised of judo contestants who were members of the Polish National team. Based on athletic achievement, the players were assigned to higher skilled (A, n=10) and lower skilled (B, n=9) groups. Both groups took part in an International judo tournament. Capillary blood was sampled (from the earlobe) at the 4th minute after a loss, that according to the rules excluded a contestant from further competition. Plasma cortisol (C) and testosterone (T) levels, the anabolic-catabolic index (T/C*103), and blood lactate (La) levels were determined.Results. The average number and total duration of fights were significantly higher in group A (3.1±1.5 and 899±498 sec) than in group B (1.1±0.3 and 254±138 sec), respectively. Overall, group A won 21 and lost 10 struggles, while group B won only 1 per 10 struggles. This confirms that the athletes in group A are more successful. Despite of higher physical load during competition, group A demonstrated somewhat higher average T level (by 21%), anabolic-catabolic index (by 23%) and a bit lower C level (by 8.5%). Average La levels were almost the same in the groups.Conclusions. More skilled and experienced female judo players showed significantly higher scores during a competition and their plasma endogenous T levels and T-to-C ratio tended to be higher than their less skilled counterparts.
