Abstract

This article addresses Lithuanian students’ issues of sleep quality associations with emotional and behavioural difficulties. The article reviews students’ sleep quality research in other countries, the prevalence and possible causes of students’ sleep disturbances. Attention is drawn to the fact that sleep disturbances are fairly common among Lithuanian students and this problem requires an exceptional attention of educators’, psychologists’ and medical professionals’. The participants of current study were students of three study profiles, i.e. medical, social sciences and arts studies. The results gathered confirmed the importance of study profile to the quality of students’ sleep quality. Associations between the affective disorders, mood disorders and somatic complains to the sleep quality were analysed. Also, the influence of behavioural problems, including health-risk behaviours such as tobacco smoking, using an alcohol or other psychoactive substances on the sleep quality is discussed. Questions for further research and consideration are proposed.
