SLAVIC LITERATURES IN KAREL ZAP’S INTERPRETATION
Journal Title: Наукові праці. Серія "Філологія. Літературознавство" - Year 2016, Vol 277, Issue 265
Abstract
The subject matter of the article is Karel Zap’s attitude to Slavic literatures, their characterization expressed in his literary and critical publications and epistolary heritage in the context of the idea of Slavic unity. The aim of the article is to investigate peculiarities and objectives of the literature of Slavic peoples as viewed by K. Zap, to prove that he perceived these literatures not only in Slavic, but in the European context. The methodological basis of the article is comprised of the statements and views of the prominent Ukrainian scholars such as I. Franko, M. Hrushevsky, K. Studynsky, D. Chyzhevsky, D. Doroshenko et al., expressed in their writings concerning the literary history of the Slavic peoples. The author uses such general scientific principles as historical, systemic, informative, cognitive. The academic novelty of the publication is in the fact that the problem formulated this way has not been examined by the researchers (P. Hontar, J. Horák, V. Hostička) of Karel Zap’s activities yet. The results of the publication can be used for lectures on the history of Slavic literatures, including Czech, as well as on the history of the Slavs. The author of the article makes the following conclusions: 1) as a person of European education with appropriate training K. Zap did not consider literature of each of the Slavic peoples in isolation from the general European literary and spiritual context; 2) K. Zap was aware of the fact that the literatures of the Slavic peoples were at different stages of develop-ment; 3) K. Zap perceived literature as one of the powerful means of preservation and formation of national identity; 4) K. Zap fundamentally opposed to the idea of messianism, which was declared by some Slavic public figures (that concerned the Polish and Russian literature); he advocated equality in Slavic relationships and the right of every nation (for example, the Ukrainians) to have their own literary language and literature; 5) K. Zap became disappointed in the idealistically interpreted idea of Slavic reciprocity, the possibility of practical realization of the idea of Slavic unity in the context of the geopolitical situation of that time in Europe, but all his activities spoke for his tireless desire to work in the field of national life, and respect for the literary achievements of each Slavic nation.
