Slenderness of 35-year -old pines from a dominant stand as an indicator of a stand stability

Journal Title: Forestry Letters - Year 2015, Vol 108, Issue

Abstract

The study material was collected on the total clearcutting made in a 35-year-old pine stand. A biosocial position was established in accordance with Kraft's criteria of classification for each tree before cutting it down. Only pines from a dominant stand (Kraft'sclassesI, II and III) wereanalysed. The following was measured for eachtree:diameter at breast height outside barkd 1,3 [cm], crown projection area pk [m2], tree height h [m], crown length lk [m], volume of merchantable timber Vgr [m3], current volume increment Zv5 [m3] and slenderness s. A biosocial position of a tree in a stand affects the slenderness coefficient of pines. Pine slenderness decreases together with the increase of each traits of a tree and its crown, increases with the deterioration of a tree position in a stand structure. Diameter at breast height, volume of merchantable timber and the current 5-year volume increment are the most strongly related with the slenderness. A strong association was also found between slenderness and the size of a tree crown. Pines of a dominant stand in a 35-year-old stand are not stable trees.
