Smuggling of endangered species of fauna through the checkpoints between Poland and Ukraine

Abstract
In the article, smuggling peculiarities of endangered species of fauna through border crossing points between Poland and Ukraine have been analyzed. The article highlights the chronology of European Union accession to various International Acts on protection and prohi- bition of smuggling of endangered species of flora and fauna. The author presents a definition of “plants and animals smuggling”, highlights cases of plants and animals smuggling at checkpoints in Przemysl during 1999–2014. She also draws reader’s attention to the statistics of smuggling of rare animals in Poland i. e. in 2014, 26 percent of smuggled animals was recorded on the Pol- ish-Ukrainian border crossings. The paper summarizes the data on the main types of plants and animals smuggling. The most common are the animals used in Chinese and Asian medicine as well exotic plants and animals. Legal medicines (pills, ointments, gels) containing ingredients de- rived from rare and endangered animals and plants constitute a separate group of smuggled goods. All these data were provided by various international organizations that monitor cases of smug- gling of rare and endangered species of flora and fauna.
