SNAKE BITE & ACUTE DISSEMINATED ENCEPHALOMYELITIS

Journal Title: Stanley Medical Journal - Year 2015, Vol 2, Issue 2

Abstract

Krait (Bungarus caeruleus) is a commonly encountered venomous snake in India. We report a rarely seen complication after a treated Krait bite. The Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is an acute disease characterized by multifocal inflammatory demyelinating lesions that typically affect the white matter of the CNS. A patient presented with Clinical and radiological finding suggestive of ADEM that occurred following treatment for krait bite. The immune-pathogenesis of demyelination following snakebite may be related to molecular mimicry. Patients who develop unexplained encephalopathy following snake bite should be screened for ADEM and appropriate therapy instituted. Early treatment will benefit the patient clinically for good recovery. This case is unique not only because of rarity of the diagnosis but also because of the improvement which the patient showed.
