A CROSS SECTIONAL STUDY ON THE HEALTH HYGIENE STATUS OF SCHOOL CHILDREN IN NORTH CHENNAI

Abstract
Context: Hygiene refers to practices that help maintain health and prevent the spread of diseases. School children are particularly vulnerable to the neglect of basic personal hygiene. The increased burden of communicable diseases among school children due to poor personal hygiene practice and inadequate sanitary condition remains a concern on the public health agenda in developing countries. Aims: To assess the basic hygiene practices among school children in North Chennai Methods and Material: This cross sectional study was carried out among 250 randomly selected school children from two schools in North Chennai for a period of three months using a pretested, structured questionnaire containing ques - tions on personal and household hygiene practices. Data was entered into excel and statistical analysis was done using SPSS v.21 Results: The participants were between 10 to 16 years. 76.4% students had healthy hygiene practices. Most of the hygiene practices like brushing teeth, hand washing, bathing and throwing wastes in dustbin were good and certain prac - tices like trimming nails once a week, not biting nails, wearing washed clothes daily and drinking boiled water moderate in the study participants. Conclusions: Future of the society depends on the health of its children. Most of the students were practicing hygienic methods with few neglected practices among them. Sustained personal hygiene education with greater involvement of parents and frequent medical examinations may yield more benefit to the students.
