SNIATYN “SOKIL” AND THE FORMATION OF VASYL ANDRUSIAK’S NATIONALIST WORLD-VIEW IN THE 1930’s

Abstract

The content and basic forms of activity of the Ukrainian sports society сenter “Sokil” in town Sniatyn are analyzed in the article. The Sokil movement in Eastern Galicia had much in common with the slavic society “Sokil”, imitating similar Polish and Czech movements. Society members emphasized paid attention to physical education and fire prevention training. The prerequisites of setting up the “Sokil” movement in the province in the early twentieth century are described. It is pointed out that at that time there were attempts to organize some of its centers, and even some of them functioned in Sniatyn and village Stetseva of Sniatyn region for a short period of time. The First World War (1914–1918) and the national liberation movement of Western Ukrainians (1918–1923) caused the decline of the organizational and practical activities of the fire and gymnastic society “Sokil”. Fighting at war experienced and trained at the pre-war period members of “Sokil” suffered from considerable losses, some of them left their motherland, moved abroad. In the interwar period, the work of Sniatyn “Sokil” was brisked up since the 1930s, despite the artificial obstacles of the Polish occupational authorities. According to the new statute on youth societies in Polish state, it was founded in 1933. Sniatyn “Sokil” in practical work specialized in the organization of athletics, swimming, skiing and volleyball. Members of the Society paid attention to gymnastics, organizing district and regional competitions in various sports. The cooperation of Sniatyn “Sokil” with sports associations and clubs of the region is shown. Vasyl Andrusyak (1915–1946) contributed greatly to the activity of the Ukrainian sports society “Sokil” in Sniatyn, he was the most famous member of it and during the Second World War representing the National Liberation Movement Opposition, became a commander of sotnia “Zmii” of the UNU, a kuren otaman of kuren “Skazheni”, a commander of Stanislaviv TV-22 “Chorny lis”, a colonel of the UPA. Although he was not the head of the society, he performed vigorous public work, belonged to the top leaders of the society, was good at athletics, skiing and swimming. All these served good basis for the national patriotic upbringing of the young boy and played an important role in the formation of his nationalist world-view. The author proves that in further research it is necessary to compare archival materials on the Ukrainian sports society activity in Sniatyn and other societies of the region with photo-illustrative materials of the museums of Sniatyn region (V. Andrusiak National Museum of Liberation Movements in Snyatin, the Museum of Liberation Movements in the Pokuttia region in Zabolotiv) and Precarpathian region (Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Museum of Liberation Movements named after Stepan Bandera) to identify and characterize well-known public figures, patriots of Ukraine. Dozens and hundreds of young people of Sniatyn region were trained in “Sokil” who followed promoted in “Sokil” high standards of physical training, ethics and public activity for a lifetime. He stressed that they together with the members of “Plast”, “Lug”, “Kameniari”, “Orly”-KAUM, the Ukrainian Sports Union took part in the formation of the OUN and the UPA, participated in the national liberation movements of the Ukrainian people in the late 1930s – the mid 1950s.
