SOCIAL CONVERGENCE AND FRAGMENTATION IN THE DONBAS COMPANY TOWNS (LATE NINETEENTH AND EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY)

Abstract

The paper presents an analysis of the controversial processes of social convergence and fragmentation within the communities of company towns in the Donbas. It demonstrates that the specific social structure, as well as the life and work conditions caused the situation when the processes of fragmentation and consolidation could co-occur at different social levels, with the dominance of a particular trend depending on the circumstances. Most of the residents were first-generation workers, who grew up in a traditional rural culture, and they were accustomed to monocultural and monoethnic communities. On the other hand, the production needs and the difficulties of life in the company towns nudged them to unify in order to reach the shared goals.
