Social Media and Emergency – New Models and Policies Enhancing Disaster Management

Abstract
Sharing information during disasters is challenging and vital, too. During instantly changes of our life-situation (disaster, accident, crime etc.) both the individual, and community level there is a great need for instantly information, actions and solutions. The ICT tools can become a very important part of the future emergency and crisis management - as always, only with clear and proven strategies, tools and preparedness. The social media upgrades emergency communication with a lot of data rich, spectacular and useful tools. The use of these tools turns nowadays, in front of our eyes from intuitively, individual use to a professional, life changer level. In this study we talk about the trend of social media, real and describable experiences from last years, and fi nally try to summarize the main messages of using social media in disaster management.
