Abstract
This article presents antonymy as a lexical category that due to its wide stylistic features reveals the social reality in the works of the West Ukrainian writer and essayist of the 60-ies of the XIX century Fedir Zarevych. Research materials are his prose («Countrychild», «Son of oprishok», «Segovius», «Two Sisters», «Family») and his own and edited by him essays in the magazine «Vechernytsi», newspaper «Rus’». The conducted study gives grounds to assert that the creative heritage of F. Zarevych is contrast at all levels: from idea to composition, from plot and characters to a separate drawing and image. An extreme condition of collapse, poverty and nothingness confront to the harmony and beauty of the world. Sufferings, pain and sorrow confront to the joy of life and happiness of his hearty feelings to confront suffering, pain, sorrow. Therefore, antonyms occupy a prominent place among the expressive means of the artist's language, play an important stylistic role. This is because they provide an opportunity to create a contrasting feature of images, concepts, objects and phenomena of contemporary reality, and therefore they are means of explination of hidden meaning of a work or the text. Antonyms are important stylistic means, not only because of their inner semantic properties that are associated with the name of their opposite realities, but also because Antonym oppositions are not something static or limited. The representative of the Galician literature F. Zarevych uses lexical antonyms not only by means of the rooted in the language scheme, but depending on the specifics of his own Outlook. However, this does not affect to an objective representation of the events through the prism of antonymy.
