Social value of work – calculation with SROI methodology

Journal Title: International Journal of Contemporary Management - Year 2012, Vol 11, Issue 3

Abstract

More and more enterprises take into account the social and environmental aspects of their activity. In spite of social awareness, which is visible, for example in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), enterprises do not measure and calculate the value of social effects and do not enroll social value in employees’ remuneration. In this context it is interesting to look deeper in pay inequality, trying to analyze how much different professions are paid and how much they contribute to society. The contribution to society may be measured by SROI (Social Return on Investment). So far SROI methodology was widely used by non-profit organizations to measure their performance and the social effect of their activity. The inspiration for implementing SROI to meas¬ure work value (changing the perspective from organization to employee) was the study of a few researchers from the New Economic Foundation (NEF), who use some of the principles and valuation techniques of SROI analysis to quantify the social, environmental and economic value of different professions. The main purpose of the article was to answer the question: what are the advantages and disadvantages of SROI in calculation of this value. This discussion may be continued in a wider context, taking into account questions concerning value of work in general (what constitutes this value), connection between social value of work and pay level in certain occupationsand pay inequality on the labor market.
