Sociology of Dwelling in Contexts: “A city like a dwelling. Ours”. The post-war strategies of taming the cities of Western and Northern Territories, on the example of Wrocław
Journal Title: Miscellanea Anthropologica et Sociologica - Year 2018, Vol 19, Issue 4
Abstract
In the article, the author raises three important issues. First of all, it is a reflection on a city’s dwelling practices – a concept that expands the scope of urban space research with categories related to sociology of everyday life – above all regarding the material living environment of people seen from the perspective of non-dominant discourses. Secondly, with the help of the category of dwelling and the examples of the inhabitants of Wrocław, the author analyzed the strategies of taming the culturally alien material heritage of the Western and Northern Territories. Thirdly, the results of the analysis are used by the author to ask questions as a starting point for future research projects. The diaries of the inhabitants of Wrocław, written in 1966 and submitted for the competition “What is the city of Wrocław for you”, are the empirical material analyzed in the article. The most important strategies of taming the city, which are present in the analyzed diaries, are based on two myths created in the 1940s – the first years of the Polish city – the pioneer myth and the Piast myth. The (German) green areas and the most important (German) monuments of the city are also important for making the city “our own”. The remaining part of the inherited city, although it shapes the everyday life of residents, is absent in the analyzed narratives. The indicated issues – above all their existence in the narratives of the current residents of the city – will be the starting point of the author’s future research activities.
