SOCIOPRODUCTIVE PROJECTS AS A STRATEGY FOR THE STRENGTHENING OF CULTURAL IDENTITY OF THE KARÍÑA PEOPLE

Abstract

Venezuelan indigenous peoples make up the country’s original population, each with its history and cultural identity, with difficulties and limitations, which has led them to incorporate some modifications to their ways of life. It is feared the possible disappearance of this ancestral heritage, if the situation continues, for which actions that motivate and allow its rescue are traced, through the implementation of the policies created by the Venezuelan State to attend and maintain these human groups. The purpose of this research was to learn about the self-management of the Karíña indigenous community of Mayagua, in the Bolívar state, as a way to preserve and strengthen their identity. This is a qualitative investigation, which follows the approach of critical hermeneutics. The selected informants were the cacique, the cultor, the chronicler and an indigenous. The participant observation and interview were the techniques used. The results showed that the Karíña community maintains its ancestral modes of production (sowing, hunting, and fishing) and o do handcraft, however, they do not use their knowledge either for self-management or as a strategy for strengthening their cultural identity
