Soil Investigation and Study of Behaviour of Soil under Foundation by Plaxis 2D

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to investigate the soil of the given site and to analyse the behaviour of soil under the foundation by finite element analysis using Plaxis 2D, on the application of load. The sample of soil at a depth of 2m was excavated from a selected site. The determination of various properties of soil samples was carries out by performing many laboratory tests such as Specific Gravity, Moisture Content, Atterberg Limits, Triaxial Test etc. and field tests such as SPT. By SPT the safe bearing capacity of the soil was calculated. The field moisture content, specific gravity, grain size analysis and plasticity properties were determined. It helps to determine the characteristics of the soil. The optimum moisture content of the soil is determined by the Standard Proctor Test. Unconfined undrained triaxial test was also done of the soil sample. The results obtained from these tests are used in Plaxis 2D to generate a model of the soil and analyse horizontal and vertical displacements, effective stresses and settlements of the soil. From the analysis results, the maximum settlements occuring under the load of 1000 kN is obtained less than the maximum permissible settlement. Hence the footing is safe for that load.
