Somatic embryogenesis: a biotechnological tool for in vitro propagation of guajava
Journal Title: Biotecnología Vegetal - Year 2017, Vol 17, Issue 4
Abstract
The guava (Psidium guajava L.), is a fruit of great importance within the tropical and subtropical regions. It is recognized as an allogamous species that crosses naturally with other variants, so that its sexual propagation can generate variability in offspring and significant delays in commercial production. On the other hand, conventional techniques of asexual propagation applied in guava have been inefficient and have made it difficult to mass this item to desirable levels. In this sense, global trends open up an increasing space to the use of propagation biotechnological techniques, where tissue culture is presented as a tool, which in combination with conventional methods of propagation can play a fundamental role in quality and the yields of the guava. Somatic embryogenesis is considered the most efficient technique for plants propagation due to the bipolar nature of the embryo, the possibility of automating the entire production process and the high multiplication rates in short periods of time. Based on these considerations, the objective of this work was to present a review of scientific literature on the use of somatic embryogenesis as a biotechnological technique for the guava in vitro propagation.
